Wondering how to style your new extensions? We have some tips and tricks that might help!

You’ve just gotten your new extensions installed. Fantastic! But you might find that styling all that new hair feels a little different. What’s changed? And how can you account for that?

Whether you have wefts, k-tips, tape-ins, or I-tips, styling your hair with extensions is a whole new ballgame. Aside from the obvious differences in length and thickness attributed to extensions, you now also need to think about how they’re blending when you style them. Luckily, we’ve been styling extensions for years at the Amanda Moncur Salon, and we have some tips and videos that might help you!

The first step is to make sure you’re curling all your hair in the same direction. There can be an exception here and there, and we’ll go over that next. But, it’s important to ensure that the majority of the curls face the same direction, so the blend can be better and not expose the attachment point of your extensions.

Now, there are two exceptions to this rule. They’re the small sections just behind your ear on either side of your head. If you curl these two pieces in the opposite direction from the rest of your hair, it creates a plumping effect that adds volume to your style, and even contours your cheekbones slightly!

The next important thing to keep in mind is the products you use. There are several aspects to keep in mind when wearing extensions that can be solved by certain products, the first being hold. Your extensions are treated to be able to hold style very well, but your natural hair might not be able to keep up. To that end, it’s very important to have a good, strong, extension-safe hairspray to use while styling. We recommend the Bangin Hairspray formulated for extensions by Amanda Moncur. With adjustable hold determined by how close or far away you spray it, this hairspray is perfect for any situation.

The next product you’ll need for seamless blend is a good texturizing spray. This will ensure that the differing textures between your natural hair and the extension hair match a bit better, and also helps you to pump up the volume and get that messy, beachy look, if that’s what you’re going for.  We recommend using the Bangin Dry Shampoo for texture, as well as for keeping your hair feeling clean and refreshed for as long as possible!

Finally, to finish the style, you’ll want to use a shine spray. Your extensions will usually be a bit shinier than your natural hair, so we want to remedy that by adding some luminosity to it! We recommend the Bangin Dry Conditioner for this, as it will add shine while also moisturizing and conditioning your natural hair, which is especially important in our dry climate!

We hope this helps anyone who may be wondering how to best curl their new extensions! If you’d like to learn more about how the pros do it, we’ve got a full tutorial you can view with all the tips and tricks listed above. You can view that video on our instagram! @amandamoncursalon
